Philippine Mobile School (DepEd, UNTV37 and ADD)

In cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd), UNTV37 and Ang Dating Daan launched a mobile school project called as "Dunong Gulong" (Wisdom on Wheels) to help the illiterates, school drop-outs, indigenous people and those with physical disabilities. DepEd will provide the learning facilitators and learning modules thru the alternative learning system (ALS) while the UNTV37, BMPI and Ang Dating Daan will maintain the 2 mobile buses with its audio-video equipment, power generator, folding tables & chairs and public address system. The 2 buses worth 13 million (6.5 million each) also includes library, toilet and sleeping quarter. The first destination of the mobile schools are the 3 municipalities and 3 barangays each in Quezon and Masbate. The project was introduced to the public last November 28, Sunday, 5pm at the Mall of Asia (during the 27th celebration of Public Service of Bro. Daniel Razon.) The memorandum of agreement (MOA) between DepEd and UNTV/Ang Dating Daan was signed November 27, Saturday at Apalit Pampanga. DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro expressed his gladness with the collaboration between DepEd and Ang Dating Daan during the signing of MOA.

The mobile school project of UNTV37 and Ang Dating Daan is in addition to its current Public Services shared to the public namely: Libreng Sakay sa Bus, Clinic ni Kuya, Law Center ni Kuya, Transient Home, and Free College Education. The Public Service Channel UNTV37 (http://www.untvweb.com/) is getting awards and recognition in it's initiative in providing unique TV programming and its public service projects. UNTV37 has numerous Anak-TV seal which means that the programs are child-friendly and promotes good character for the well-being of our children.

The 2 buses worth 13 million (6.5 million each) includes LCD monitor & projectors, for educational Visual presentations, and cabinets for the mini library inside the bus. Laptop and instructional CDs are also provided inside the bus. With touring in remote places in mind, the bus also include toilet and sleeping quarter for the teacher to use. With UNTV37 and Ang Dating Daan leading the way, we can only hope that other private organizations can join in helping the Government in helping and extending a helping hand to our poor country men.

Physicians playing God - assisting people to commit suicide

All people have the right to live, but Is there such a thing as a right to die?

If you don't believe in God, you are pretty much on your own. You can do whatever you want with your life. Screwing up your life does not bother you much; anyway, you own your life, right? But to any sensible and thinking individual, it is quite logical to believe that there is a God. The universe, the solar system, the earth, the proper distance of sun and moon, plants and animals, the wonderful creations, all of these things did not came from out of nowhere. All things around us were created by a powerful intelligent and compassionate being. God gave us life and it is only fair enough to say that God has the only right to take our lives

The separation between (Physician) Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia is quite a very thin line. But I guess the story of Sir Edward Downes (one of Britain's most well-known conductors) will really differentiate PAS and Euthanasia. I personally believe that PAS should have not been granted to the couple because FIRST - Sir Edward Downes was not terminally ill SECOND - His wife (Joan) has pancreatic cancer and given weeks to live. They should have just waited for her to die instead of allowing them to kill themselves.

At this point, the legalized (Physician) Assisted Suicide was abused.
Romantically, the couple where kind of a modern-day older version of Romeo and Juliet.
But Morally and Spiritually, this is totally wrong.

On the case of the Downes couple, We cannot call it Euthanasia but as a clear case of Assisted Suicide. They have paid the amount of $7,000 for each patient for them to "kill themselves with dignity" and with the assistance of a Physician and basically they are actually not dying (Joan was still given weeks to live before the assisted suicide)

(The couple drunk a poison together inside a "clinic" and died after several minutes).
The whole process was video-taped while their kids are watching.

The decision of the Downes couple is their personal matters. Even without the Physician Assisted Suicide, they can simply buy a gun and shoot themselves if they really want to. What matters most is the impact that this kind of act might give to the other prospective people who will follow their death pact. "Legalized" Assisted Suicide is like of allowing people to kill themselves. This is vulnerable to a different level of abuse. Losing hope, despair, and loneliness can trigger anyone to cash out some money and walk-in to a drive-thru clinic and perform a "dignified?) Painless suicide. Yes, I am also looking to EMOs and troubled teenagers. Dysfunctional parents hide their guns at home, some parents kill their children out of desperation and in the near future, parent might also give consent to their children to commit PAS. It may sound far-fetching but please go back to this site when that thing happens.

The legalized (Physician) Assisted Suicide in some countries is actually a law that can benefit (?) and can be used only by people who can afford it. By paying some money to a clinic that offers PAS, you can already undergo the assisted suicide in a dignified painless way. Painful death is more usually experienced by the less fortunate folks. Without enough money, they have to endure most serious cases. Poor folks sometimes die enduring such an unimaginable pain without any medical help especially when you're in a poor country like the Philippines. I am not suggesting that (Physician)-Assisted Suicide should also be open to the poor people but what I am trying to say is that the "legalized" (Physician) Assisted Suicide will only benefit a minor people but will affect the moral and spiritual side of a greater number of people.

Death is not a simple choice you make overnight. It is a major decision that will cost you not only your life but your soul as well. Suicide, Euthanasia, (Physician)-Assisted Suicide is not being suggested by the Bible to Christians. Is suicide an escape? Yes. In the (Physician)-Assisted Suicide, the doctors are the one who are playing God. It is the Physician who will tell on who, when and how someone will actually die. (I think this is the reason why more and more doctors are reluctant on being involved with assisted suicide)

Do I consider Physicians who assists people to take their own lives as murderers? My answer, I think they are. Preparing a poison for people who are willing to die is a kind of abomination to me. This is synonymous of buying a gun and giving it to people so they can kill themselves and the worse of it, is these Physicians are getting paid for helping people to kill themselves.

He had become almost totally dependent on his wife after his health declined following a hip replacement. Lady Downes wrote a letter to family explaining that she had decided against treatment and that:

Now, I must tell you that even though I had hoped to be around a bit longer, death doesn’t worry me at all.

Sir Edward, aged 85, and Lady Downes, aged 74, ended their lives by assisted suicide at the Dignitas clinic in Zürich, Switzerland, on 10 July 2009. Although Joan did not want the children present, Dignitas encouraged it and "Ted and Joanie" were reported to be pleased when the time came. Their children issued a statement speaking of "serious health problems" suffered by the couple. A statement issued by the couple's children said that while Downes could have gone on living with his deafness and blindness, he did not want to do so after his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Scientifically, blood can save other lives or even your own (thru Autologous donation). A lot of people have benefited from the blood donation from anonymous people. People may need blood transfusion because of different reasons such as replacing of blood lost during surgery, thrombocytopenia caused by a blood disease or some related blood disease. Worldwide, people are being encouraged by the Red Cross to donate blood.

Donating blood is beneficial to both the recipient and to the donor as well. Donating blood can help stimulate the generation of red blood cells of the donor. Medical doctors have put restrictions on the interval a person can donate blood; we can donate blood quarterly (every 3months). Yes, blood can save lives.

Through the years, Members of Church of God International (MCGI) led by Presiding Minister Bro Eli and Vice-Presiding Minister Bro Daniel Razon has been helping the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) to educate and convince people to donate blood and bring it to the blood bank. The MCGI has been tirelessly supporting PNRC to save lives of the ones who need blood transfusions. The mass blood letting program of the MCGI all over the Philippines has been providing the PNRC the help it needed to gather more blood and give it to the ones who are in need. Yes, I am also a blood donor. I was initially scared of donating blood because I'm afraid of seeing blood (this is part on the reason why I didn't took nursing course on college). Until I realized that a lot of people need it and I can actually save lives. Cool I can be a hero. Let's get it on.

Back to work from a long weekend of Thanksgiving to our Almighty God. Members of Church of God International offered thanksgiving (March 13-14) and celebrated New Year, based on Hebrew Calendar (March 15). The thankful Members of the Church of God International offered songs and praises despite of all the hardship and persecution they encountered from their adversaries. March 15 is a Monday, a working day; did not stopped the members of Church of God International in attending the New Year celebration.

Most of them filed for leave of absence while some of them risked of losing their jobs just to attend the festivities. I knew some brethren who were not allowed to take leave to attend a religious event/gathering but they still attended the thanksgiving to thank God. It is quite common news that some people lost their job because of economic recession, company bankruptcy or sometimes, misappropriate conduct, job-related scandal, adultery and other wrongdoings by an employee. Occasionally, there are some people who lost their job for speaking the truth (mostly journalists or bloggers) and most of the time, being a whistle blower will cost your job.

But losing a job because of your faith (i.e. just to attend a thanksgiving to God) is quite unusual news on our daily lives. Without a strong faith to a God, you cannot simply forsake losing a job out of faith. (Losing your job just because of being refused on a 1 day leave is a clear indication that your boss/company is not a good employer)

Setting the standard of choosing between faith and job.

Years ago, Bro. Daniel Razon, a well-known public service broadcaster in the Philippines, lost a job from a big TV network because they asked him to stop his preaching to the congregation because the rival church group has petitioned him to be fired from the network.

Bro. Daniel Razon has been professional to his work, he was never been late to his shows, did not put GMA7 network in a bad light, he is well-loved by his co-workers and did not do anything wrong for the company. GMA7 tried to get into Bro. Daniel Razon's personal beliefs by asking him to stop preaching to appease the protesting religious rival of MCGI. This did not stop Bro. Daniel Razon in his strong conviction for the truth. He has said to the big bosses of GMA7...

"I would rather lose my job than lose my God"

GMA7 have let go Bro. Daniel Razon.
The result was not as expected by GMA7:
- GMA7 viewer ship ratings received negative results.
- Bro. Daniel Razon became the CEO of the UNTV37 alternative UHF channel.
- GMA7's morning show faced a new fresh "Good Morning Kuya" morning show rival.
- "Good Morning Kuya" morning show received Anak TV award snapping the award from GMA7 and ABS-CBN2.
- Different GMA7 shows needed 'reformatting' while some of them were closed permanently (i.e. Sunday show SOP)

Everyday, people all over the world loses their job for different reasons. [Yes, I watched George Clooney's Up In The Air movie and saw how serious getting fired to employees, it affects their whole families as well] It only matters on what is the reason or cause of losing a job, did you did anything wrong? Some companies (mostly are big corporations) promotes the balance of work and family.

Doing good at work while losing time for your family is not good.
Well, doing good at work while losing time for your soul is not good either.
Worse is, you get lots of money and respect from your co-workers but losing God is a terrible investment.

There's a Sister-in-faith in our locale who refused to accept a new job because her first day of job should be on March 15 (Monday) and the employer wants her to start on that day. She opted to attend the Thanksgiving Day/Christian New Year than to be on her first day of job. Now that's what I call faith! (As have previously taught by our preacher based on the bible - show us your faith by your works)

UNTV37 - The Public Service Channel

Our less fortunate friends have now a shelter (UNTV transient home) to cover their heads at night and even when there's a rain, a light to cover them from the darkness of the busy streets and food to fill their empty stomach. MCGI and UNTV now provide the Philippines' FIRST and ONLY FREE transient home that provides free shelter and free food to the needy. This serious task of providing FREE public service out of goodwill is not just propaganda; this is a unique and genuine intention from a Christian group that wants to spread the word and good works of God. The project is spearheaded by the multi-awarded presiding minister Bro Eli Soriano of "Ang Dating Daan" (The Old Path") and well-known broadcaster "Mr. Public Service" Daniel "Kuya" Razon.

What is more impressive with the relatively small congregation compared to other rich religious group is that their willingness to serve the people even it means of spending lots of money everyday, THAT'S EVERYDAY!!! It is estimated that around P200,000 are being spent everyday for the free medical and other services being offered by UNTV37 and MCGI. Other church groups organize charity works ONLY during their church anniversaries or during the birthday celebration of their preachers. UNTV37 and MCGI is different. Their strong will of following the Christian teaching of taking care of the needy is their "driving force" to do these noble and admirable challenging tasks on offering public service EVERYDAY. EVERYDAY!!!

Not only that UNTV37 cooperates with different Philippine government agencies (DSWD, POEA, PDEA, etc...), it also working hard with non-government organizations like the Philippine Red Cross. MCGI and UNTV37 have been strongly advocating blood donation all over the Philippines. As a result, "Ang Dating Daan" is constantly the recipient of awards from the different chapters of Red Cross all over the country as being the top organization who donates blood. You can watch everyday in the morning show Good Morning Kuya that there are blood donations being held from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao showing people donating blood lead by the Ang Dating Daan members. Even the Ang Dating Daan Singapore is also working and donating blood in cooperation with the Singapore Red Cross.

Aside from these DAILY public services,
UNTV and MCGI are also involved in several special projects such as
- YCONCON concerts (youth concert which benefits out of school youth),
- Test Broadcast concerts (benefits the family and relatives of the slain journalists),
- Isang Araw Lang Marathon run (benefits a College school which will provide free tuition fee, allowance, uniforms and books.

It's really comforting to know that when there's a time you need for shelter and food, a transient home is ready to help and support us. It's really comforting to know that in this time of hardship and perils, there are still kind of organization (MCGI) that is willing to extend a helping hand to the needy. It's really comforting to know that there's a Christian group that is waving the flag of goodwill, waving the flag of Christian teaching; not only by preaching it --> but also by doing it.

Filipino Communities in Singapore

There are many Filipinos working and living here in Singapore. With their great numbers, some Singaporean local citizens here have already know how to distinguish the Filipino looks compared from other Asian nationalities, and they also know some Filipino greetings such as "Kumusta" and "Magandang Araw". More than once than I boarded a taxi cab here in Singapore when taxi drivers realize that I am a Filipino, they will put on Freddie Aguilar's old folk song "Anak" on their cassette stereo. They said that the Anak song of Freddie Aguilar was a huge hit here in Singapore which makes me more proud of being a Filipino.

Being apart from our native land (although it's just a 3 hour flight from Manila to Singapore), Filipinos here organized different type of communities here in Singapore. Different pinoy shows/concerts are also showed here occasionally. Filipino food stores in Singapore are also available if you miss the Filipino cuisines back at home. (Filipino stores are mostly located at the Lucky Plaza Mall in Orchard Road. Some Pinoy restaurants can also be found in Lau Pha Sat) Filipinos Here in Singapore love to hang out in Lucky Plaza Mall every Sunday as well. In addition, I have also been informed that some Filipinos are also hanging out in the Chinese Garden.

One Filipino artist who has captured the attention of Singapore's music industry is Rico Blanco (Former Rivermaya band member). He made some series of performances here in Singapore and released an "international" record which was featured in one of the popular daily newspaper here. Obviously, based on their comments, they were quite impressed with the Pinoy talent giving his solo album 4/5 rating.

The Filipino Sports community is one of the most active groups here in Singapore.
Last year, BMPI and Filcras (Filipino Coaches and Referees Association of Singapore) organized a basketball league here with 8 Filipino teams. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the Philippine embassy and special guest Singapore Slinger basketball team point guard Al Vergara. Fun, laughter and sportsmanship were shared among the Filipinos throughout the duration of the basketball league. Prizes, Trophies and awards were given to the individual winners and teams. The event was reported back to channel UNTV37 on Manila, Philippines.

Christians are not cigarette smokers

I never grew fond of smoking cigarettes. Even I have loved watching my action movie heroes which sometimes they smoke cigarettes to add further masculinity to their image, I was never attracted on smoking cigarettes. To me it's a disgusting habit for a teenager. Back when I was still a high school student, my perception of students smoking cigarettes is that they just want to get noticed and get attractions from girls. Which I think is a counter move because "nice" high-school girls hate cigarettes, only flirty high schools girls like boys who are cigarette-smokers. I even think back then, that kids who smoke cigarettes are just quite rebellious or probably they have family problems so they turn into such vices.

We are a poor family but grew up inside a happy and strict home with rules to be followed. No beer and cigarette smoking until you finish college. For me, that was not a senseless law. It was simply a logical thinking. I was a student with no extra money to spare for vices. Every cent given to me by my father is hard-earned so it would be irresponsible for me to waste in cigarettes and beers. Furthermore, it would be more stupid If I was not able to finish college because of vices.

I think most of the cigarette smokers started during their adolescent period (as if they want to prove something by smoking cigarettes). It does not make any sense to me.

Almost 7 years ago, I was 23 years old when I embraced Christianity. Logically, scientifically and spiritually; cigarette should have no place in our body. If the Spirit of God dwelleth inside of us, why would a Christian desecrate a temple of God by smoking cigarettes?

Not only we endanger our health by smoking cigarettes but we also endanger our close-relatives by the secondhand smoke we emit.

As Christians, we should not smoke cigarettes. Scientists and doctors have warned us enough already about the hazardous implications of smoking cigarettes to our bodies. Even the disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ wishes followers to be in good health.

The Eagle has landed in the Hauz

Michael "Eagle" Riggs has a new show in the multi-awarded Anak-TV public service station UNTV37. Eagle is hosting the EASY LANG YAN show every Friday 4:30-5:00pm. The show will be giving us tips and simple solutions to our daily problems inside and outside our households. Different advices to home improvements will also be shared by the veteran comedian. Eagle has been entertaining Filipinos for many years already starting from Channel 2, Channel 7 and now UNTV37. (Based on the sequence of TV networks that Eagle has been with, I noticed that his network affiliations just keeps on getting better especially now that he is a certified KASAMBAHAY in UNTV37)

The contract of Eagle with GMA7 was not renewed because of the needed program-reformat of the morning show "Unang Hirit". GMA7 morning show Unang Hirit's TV rating has been suffering low viewer ship compared to other Morning shows; Umagang kay Ganda of ABS-CBN2 and the rising alternative morning show GOOD MORNING KUYA of UNTV37.

An old friend, Chairman and CEO of UNTV Mr. Daniel Razon called Eagle to join UNTV37 with the new weekly show Easy Lang Yan. "Kuya" Daniel Razon and Eagle was both part of the Unang Hirit morning show previously. It is interesting to note that both of them suffered a sudden hush decision by the GMA7 management.

Catcher In The Rye - The book, the legend and the song

*** This blog was written out of my heavy fascination to the Guns N' Roses song Catcher In The Rye. I made a simple research on why did the classic book of J.D. Salinger affected many people including Mark David Chapman in killing John Lennon which eventually inspired Axl Rose to write such a very beautiful tribute song.

The Book

You can read the whole plot of the Catcher In The Rye book in wikipedia-The Cather In The Rye. I just like to share my thoughts on which and how some parts of the book probably affected Mark David Chapman in convincing himself to kill John Lennon. The main protagonist of the book is a 16 year old kid named Holden Caulfield. Holden initially wanted to escape New York and go to the western part of USA to escape his adolescent problems (family, school, bullying) but later changed his mind after her younger sister, Phoebe, insisted on coming with him. Holden sees himself as 'protector' and 'guardian' of Phoebe from the atrocities of the world which was explicitly mentioned by Holden in this part of the book...

While I was walking up the stairs, though, all of a sudden I thought I was going to puke again. Only, I didn't. I sat down for a second, and then I felt better. But while I was sitting down, I saw something that drove me crazy. Somebody's written "Fuck you" on the wall. It drove me damn near crazy. I thought how Phoebe and all the other little kids would see it, and how they'd wonder what the hell it meant, and then finally some dirty kid would tell them--all cockeyed, naturally--what it meant, and how they'd all think about it and maybe even worry about it for a couple of days. I kept wanting to kill whoever's written it. I figured it was some pervert bum that'd sneaked in the school late at night to take a leak or something and then wrote it on the wall. I kept picturing myself catching him at it, and how I'd smash his head on the stone steps till he was good and goddam dead and bloody. But I knew, too, I wouldn't have the guts to do it. I knew that. That made me even more depressed. I hardly even had the guts to rub it off the wall with my hand, if you want to know the truth. I was afraid some teacher would catch me rubbing it off and would think I'd written it. But I rubbed it out anyway, finally. Then I went on up to the principal's office.

In the portion above, Holden is trying to hide Phoebe and some other little kids in seeing "F*ck You" written on the wall. He initially wished of finding the one who wrote it and smashing his head on the stone steps but later he realized that he can't do that because he is weak. This thought added a quite depression / frustration to Holden. The feeling of being helpless in shielding Phoebe and the other kids from the "filthiness", "harshness" and "cruelty" of the world.

On the later part of the book, Holden mentioned to Phoebe his dream job. The job of being the CATCHER IN THE RYE where he would catch or prevent children from falling to a cliff. He would see himself as the hero/savior to the kids who are playing in the middle of a rye field. His only job is to watch over children who are playing. As stated in this following excerpt from the book...

"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around--nobody big, I mean--except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff--I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy."

The real and 'phony' Holden Caulfield?
Mark Chapman was a Christian when he was still a teenager which idolizes John Lennon and the Beatles. Mark Chapman was reportedly disappointed by John Lennon's 1966 remark that The Beatles are "more popular than Jesus". Let me quote what wikipedia has to say the possible motive of Chapman in killing John Lennon....

It has been suggested that, as a young boy, Chapman was "very sensitive and that his parents' anger towards each other intruded upon his normal development. He retreated from a very early age into a fantasy world." Chapman was a fan of the Beatles, particularly Lennon, but was reportedly angered by Lennon's infamous 1966 remark that the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus." Jan Reeves, sister of one of Chapman's best friends, reports that Chapman "seemed really angry toward John Lennon, and he kept saying he could not understand why John Lennon had said it. According to Mark, there should be nobody more popular than the Lord Jesus Christ. He said it was blasphemy. Chapman had also read in a library book (John Lennon: One Day at a Time by Anthony Fawcett) about Lennon's life in New York. "He was angry that Lennon would preach love and peace but yet have millions [of dollars]," said his wife Gloria. Chapman later said that "He told us to imagine no possessions, and there he was, with millions of dollars and yachts and farms and country estates, laughing at people like me who had believed the lies and bought the records and built a big part of their lives around his music."

Chapman was obsessed with the book Catcher In The Rye and sees John Lennon as a phony, an impostor of a "catcher" that must be eliminated. Chapman maybe thinking if he would be able to stop Lennon, he is successful of being a catcher for the kids that is being fooled by the catcher impostor John Lennon.

Before killing John Lennon, he bought a copy of Cather In The Rye in New York and he wrote "This is my statement" and signed it as "Holden Caulfield". After killing John Lennon, he sat there in the crime scene while reading Cather In The Rye. At the initial hearing of the murder case filed against Mark Chapman, he sent a statement to The New York Times urging everyone to read the book calling it an "extraordinary book that holds my answer"

The Song

The Guns N Roses song Catcher In The Rye was written by AXL ROSE after watching a documentary about Chapman. He said he wanted to write something for Lennon and his family. The end result is without saying a masterpiece. Here's my interpretation:

The song is about young fans and teenagers who idolize their favorite rock stars too much that they rely to their music as a consolation for their problems. It's how they consider their favorite rock stars as heroes that help them escape from their troubles in the "outside world". These are kids who have problems (family, school, peer pressure, society) who are looking for comfort. But when the time that their idols are no longer meeting their expectations of being someone you can lean on, (in this case where John Lennon said that The Beatles are "bigger than Jesus" which started to disappoint Chapman), these troubled kids started to experience a rude awakening and do something drastic actions.

Being a Catcher In The Rye book-freak, Chapman initially considers John Lennon as his "catcher" but later found out that Lennon is not doing his job well enough so he decided to get rid of John Lennon. Chapman may have thought that Lennon is so phony to become Holden Caulfield so Chapman decided to takeover the job of being the "Catcher In The Rye". Chapman considered himself to be the one who will save other kids losing their innocence from this phony world, saving kids from phony people like John Lennon. The obsession of Chapman to the book Catcher In The Rye took over and did the unthinkable thing by killing John Lennon.

You may also find interesting to watch the movie CHAPTER 27 starring Jared Leto as Mark Chapman. The title "Chapter 27" suggests a continuation of J.D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye, which has 26 chapters only. The movie explores Chapman's psyche during the dates from December 6 to the date of John Lennon's death on December 8 1980.

Over 50,500 people have ran and joined the benefit half-marathon led by Mr.Public Service 'Kuya' Daniel Razon to raise funds for the completion of the construction of 10-storey Christian School that will provide FREE Tuition fee, FREE books, FREE uniforms, FREE meal, FREE lodging and allowance to scholars.

The Isang Araw Lang – Takbo para sa Libreng Kolehiyo (Just One Day – Run for Free College) was held last January 31 at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Members of Church of God International (aka Ang Dating Daan) joined the half-marathon-for-a-cause with one mission in their minds, to help the less fortunate youths to have FREE education and finish their studies. This lives-changing benefit marathon was spearheaded by Bro. Eli Soriano and Bro Daniel Razon.

MCGI members are well-known as wide-Bible readers with their church presiding minister Bro Eli Soriano as their preacher. Not only these cool church-goers can read the bible, they can also run for the benefit of others. Being a Christian, we should not be confined inside the church or locale only; we should also go outside and think/care about others.

Other church groups maybe too busy in attracting politicians inside their church but the MCGI is serious in inviting all people to think about the welfare of others, to reach out. The FREE Education, books, uniform, meal, lodging and allowance are just part of the on-going free public services by the morning show Good Morning Kuya everyday. FREE Bible, Medicine, Medical Checkup, Legal advice, transient homes, Bus rides and MRT rides are given away for FREE to all our fellowmen.

Other participants of the event were Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Dionisio Santiago, members of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA), and members of several Rotary Club chapters in the Philippines. All of them are also encouraging everyone, specially Filipino youth to stay off drugs. As Bro. Daniel Razon said to the participants "No to drugs. Yes to God!".

With great anticipation, we have been eagerly waiting for the upcoming benefit concert entitled ProTest Broadcast 3 (May 17, 2010, Araneta Coliseum). It is the third installation of concert series benefiting different recipients (mostly the Family and relatives of slained journalists in particular). The focus of the ProTest Broadcast 3 rock concert will be the gruesome murder of the journalists in the Maguindanao massacre last November 23. UNTV correspondents were included in over 50 victims which is considered to be the most brutal massacre occurred in an election related violence in the Philippines.

The Maguindanao massacre made the Philippines as the most dangerous place for journalists around the world surpassing Afghanistan and Iraq. Last year, according from The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a New York based press freedom group, reported the number of journalists per country as follows; 4 from Iraq, 9 from Somalia, 4 from Pakistan, 3 from Russia and including the 31 from Maguindanao, Philippines.

The Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) also released the following statement in their website:
“Under the current government, the Philippines has become the most dangerous place in the world for media workers. At least 74 journalists have been killed during its eight-year tenure, yet the (Arroyo) government has not acted to end the culture of impunity. At last count, only four convictions had been secured,...”

Certainly, the Maguindanao massacre have again placed the Philippines in a bad light of violence among to its journalists, men and women. The murderers have tried to bury the evidence of their crimes but we should not let them bury their atrocity from our memory. The proceeds of the Protest Broadcast 3 concert will go to the family and relatives of the of the murdered journalists and civilians. Please show your support and be there.
